Comfort Classic Throwbacks

With these throwback techniques from the 1950s, you can turn almost any dish into a comfort food classic. Here are a few ways to get a taste of the timeless.

  1. Serve mashed potatoes, rice or macaroni & cheese with a large ice cream scoop.
  2. Dinner plates or trays with built-in compartments are reminiscent of school lunches and TV dinners. Eating off of one of these plates or trays makes everything taste better!
  3. Buy some inexpensive old fashioned milkshake glasses—make fruit smoothies and top with yogurt and a cherry just like a milkshake. You can also make healthy breakfast parfaits in them with layers of yogurt, fruit and granola. And anytime you serve beverages with crushed ice and a straw, it tastes better. That's pretty good for a $2 investment!
  4. Make fruit-flavored gelatin with bananas or canned fruit cocktail, cut it into squares and serve on lettuce leaves with a dollop of mayonnaise.
  5. Serve fresh or canned fruit halves with cottage cheese or cream cheese softened with a little orange juice or the canning syrup from the fruit.
  6. Wrap sandwiches for lunches in wax paper—what is it about the crinkly sound when you unwrap them that makes even peanut butter and jelly seem like so much more?

    Plastic squeeze bottles are great for making pancakes. Just put the batter in a bottle, cut the tip to make a large opening, then squeeze batter right onto the griddle. (Thin out thick batter with milk or water.) Chill leftover batter right in the bottle.
